What's an SMD? It's a really frickin' small LED. A few millimeters by a millimeter big. What's it good for? When you need something lit and have no room. As consumer electronics get smaller and smaller surface mount LEDs are becoming more and more popular, anything that lights up and fits in your pocket utilizes surface mount diodes.
The industry standard are SMD types 1206, 0603 and 0805, we currently offer 0603 and 0805. They vary physically (not much of a difference but 0805 are slightly larger) as can be seen in their individual specifications.
Because of their outrageously small size we don't recommend them to the average hobbyist. They're hard to solder, require tweezers, small contacts, a magnifying glass and are easy to lose if you're not careful. On the flip side, because of their size they are amazingly versatile. If you know what you're doing and have the guts to go for it it's possible to mod anything from your game boy to your ipod to your cell phone.
Imagine something the size of a few grains of sand lighting up... the possibilities are endless.
